Experience Wink 26.09: Ranch, beer, waffle house

I've been binging on one of the great stories of the year - it's finally some GOOD news, and I think it relates to everything I stand for when it comes to experiences.

Did you hear about the Scottish fan who flew into Boston expecting a country he'd been warned about, only to crown (or cone) it "New Scotland" because so many of his countrymen had taken over the bars in kilts? Free drink refills and a morning "hello" won him over.

Watch enough of these World Cup clips (if this is news to you, Google it), and a pattern emerges that is worth mentioning: Europeans are going crazy this summer. And it's not about the soccer game.

It's a Brit losing his mind over a Waffle House biscuit.
A Japanese man drenching himself in BBQ sauce.
A German with his first plate of biscuits and gravy crying tears of joy.
A whole continent suddenly demanding Europe import ranch dressing.

Perceptions have been that America is all guns, ghettos, and the great lost promise. But, all the Europeans here for FIFA have a different view. Their views got changed at a table, at the grocery store, in Walmart. Living the experience. The Americana experience. It's currently changing hearts and minds.

Belief doesn't move because you explained something better. Opinions, beliefs, passion - they happen when someone experiences something different than the expectation.

What the hell does this have to do with anything?
The brand story does not do the convincing. No commercial. No PPT deck. No whitepaper.

The human-lived experience is what confirms, denies, or changes perception. And that is the power of live experiences. The power to change, to transform people.

What if you thought about that before you brought people together?
What will it feel like? To be in his/her/their shoes? It's not a silly thing to do. It's everything - get in their shoes. Look at it from their perspective. Who knew ranch dressing could be such a hit!

Keep thinking, keep winking
