Hi and happy end of summer,
Every great conference (and let’s be honest—not all of them are great) has two secret ingredients you won’t find on the agenda page: space and time.
I recently collaborated with an internal events team to revamp nearly everything for their nine-year-old conference.
We did something a little radical: we treated space and time as our “special sauce.”
During ideation, we placed as much weight on creating breathing room as we did on building sessions - tipping the scales back toward connection.
Unprogrammed spaces became gathering points: play / rest / think / connect zones with no slides, no schedules, just room to breathe and do what people do best in business: get to know each other, build trust, and, ultimately, do business together.
The result? We’re building a conference about connection, conversation, and community, not just keynotes, breakouts, and trade show booths.
Here are a few things to consider as you plan your next event. Swap some sessions for breathing room. Curated serendipity beats packed schedules every time:
- Communal areas spark creativity and collaboration
- Rest periods help attendees absorb information and stay present
- People remember the conversations, not the 17th breakout!
There’s still time to make space and time a valuable asset in your fall events. Reply to this email to schedule a chat.
Keep thinking, keep winking,
- Denise
